Dosho Tessema Shifferaw is the founder of Bowflex and felt there was a market for quality home gym equipment. I’d say he was right about that After working my very long office job the last thing I want to do is get in my car, sit in traffic, find a place to park, and then use the gym (I do crossfit a few times a week as well and like that much more.) The Bowflex Max Trainer M5 and is an intriguing cardio machine and is a great way to get a quick workout in that gets great results.
Does it hold up to what I expect from a cardio machine? After all, I have seen numerous machines over the years on this journey to become fitter, and many have left a lot to be desired. The Bowflex M5 – A Beautiful Machine
Before diving into the cardio-related details, it is best to appreciate the beauty of this machine. I have a home gym with an all-black background, which was perfect for this machine. It fits right in. The red trim and the gorgeous monolithic arms to go along with it.
It is a beautiful machine and as usual, Bowflex does not miss the mark here.
It will look sleek and beautiful when you have it assembled and ready to go. You won’t have to worry about this.
Resistance Levels Are Evenly Balanced
There are 16 resistance levels with this machine. I enjoyed the idea of being able to monitor how my body is reacting and then choosing the appropriate resistance level on the spot. I enjoy control of this nature. I had a treadmill in the past where rotating through speeds was not easy, and there were gaps between the speeds (i.e. 1 to 1.5).
It was a hassle, and that is why I care about settings such as this and how they play out.
The resistance levels are great and will push you once you start cranking it up. The sweaty towel laying beside the machine at this moment can attest to that!
Calories Are Burned In Minutes
They claim to burn 2.5x calories more than a regular cardio workout would do. Is this true will be the question you are asking and I was as well when reading it? Surely, they are out of their minds and spicing up the product to make it look good right?!
Well, I do think they have oversold it, but once you push to the higher levels and follow their workout programs, you will be getting close to that “2.5x” number.
It is a real workout, and you will feel it all over the place. I don’t think I was able to get up in the morning after the first workout! It was that effective.
Easy On The Joints
I am a person who has been dealing with joint pain for years. It has been taxing and something I do care about. I often have to take painkillers when the joints become rigid and hard to bend. This is why a machine such as this has to take into account people such as me.
Bowflex is good about this, and the machine is fantastic on my joints.
I didn’t hesitate to get on this machine because it was clearly made for someone like me who has joint issues. I don’t think I’ll ever complain about that with the M5.
Simple To Use Interface
The interface is necessary with modern cardio machines, and the same goes for Bowflex’s Max Trainer. It is an excellent interface that is simple to use, and their intuitive controls are something I enjoy. I have larger fingers, so I want the interface to respond to what I am telling it to do.
The interface is fantastically divided and laid out for the average person.
I have never had an issue with the interface. It is gorgeous to look at and even better to work with. I think this is another spot where Bowflex’s experience comes through. A newer company might overlook this and get lost in the other details.
Gorgeous Backlit Display
The backlit display is immaculate, to say the least. I was blown away when the machine cranked up, and the screen lit up in my face. It was gorgeous; I almost wanted to stop working out and just admire what was in front of me. The size of this backlit display is neat and good enough to read from all angles.
Accurate Heart Rate Monitor
Bowflex has added a heart rate monitor to the machine and of course, I feel that is always important. You should be keeping track of your heart rate at all times. You don’t want it to go over what you would like to hit nor would you like to underachieve while working out similar to the Bowflex PR1000.
The heart rate monitor is well-balanced and easy to use. I think it was perfect for the machine.
Amazing Smartphone App
This is the new option that is being given with the M5, and I adore it. I am an avid smartphone user, and this is right up my alley. I think the smartphone app is a neat idea that makes working out fun. You can track data and the machine syncs with your phone in seconds.
I was able to track results and see where I was lagging and what I was excelling at.
The layout of the app is excellent just like the machine. The syncing is easy too.
The design is good because I was worried it might rattle a lot and that is not okay for a small house such as mine. The rattling used to bug me with the old treadmill I had. This cardio machine is a powerhouse, and it does not sway easily.
Noticeable Noise Levels
What about the motor/fan noise once you start cranking it up? This is a con that I would like to list. They have not done a good job with the noise. It does make noise, and I am unable to hear the stereo I turn on in the background. I wasn’t too happy about that the first time around.
You should be aware of this before you buy it. I mean the sound isn’t ridiculous where your neighbors will complain, but it is noticeable.
Warranty Could Be Longer
Another con that I would list has to include the warranty. I think a company such as Bowflex should be able to give more in this part of the deal. You are paying a lot for a great machine, but you want to be safer with the investment too. They should be pushing it higher to at least five years.
It is a small con, but still one I felt should be mentioned for you to look at.
